Apple Plans Siri for Mac in OS X 10.12 ➝

Mark Gurman, reporting for 9 to 5 Mac:

Apple currently plans to use its next major release of the Mac operating system, known as OS X 10.12, this fall to continue to expand Siri across its product lines. Last year, Apple implemented Siri as cornerstone features of both the Apple Watch and new Apple TV, and for 2016, Siri is planned to finally make its way to the Mac.

I was discussing this on Twitter with Joe Caiati and Keenan Schneider earlier this morning. We came to the conclusion that Apple should just kill Launchpad on OS X and put Siri on the F4 key. Because nobody uses Launchpad.

But perhaps a more rational approach would be for Apple to mimic iOS’ home button functionality with the F4 key — press for Launchpad, hold for Siri.

Hump Day ➝

Keenan Schneider offers a healthy dose of rational discussion on Apple’s newly released battery case:

Flexible silicone exterior, making inserting and removing your phone significantly easier than any other option out there. A Lightning port that can easily fit onto a dock, and allows you to charge both the case and the phone at exactly the same time with a single cable. An intelligent battery indicator that integrates seamlessly with iOS. Extra antennas built in to ensure that using the case as intended doesn’t ruin your reception. Not to mention keeping the areas surrounding the battery itself as thin as possible to provide the best possible ergonomic situation. You can’t say any of that about any other option out there.

I didn’t really understand all the outrage over Apple’s Smart Battery Case. It’s humped back is definitely aesthetically unappealing, but I’ve never seen a battery case on the market that could be described as “attractive.” And given all of the additional features that Apple’s offering provides, I would probably end up buying their’s if I was ever in need of such a thing.

Sextless Marriage ➝

A new podcast by Gia Scalise and Keenan Schneider. They’re only one episode in and I’m already hooked.

Podcasts Coming to Google Play Music ➝

Elias Roman, writing for the Official Android Blog:

To that end, today we’re launching a portal for podcasters to start uploading their shows to Google Play Music before we open up the service to listeners. Along with direct searches and browsing for podcasts, the service will connect new listeners with podcasts based on what they’re doing, how they’re feeling, or what they’re interested in. Similar to our contextual playlists for music, this will give podcast fans and new listeners a way of finding and listening to content that’s unique to Google Play Music.

It’s not all good news, though. G. Keenan Schneider did some digging into the terms of service and found something abhorrent:

As much as I’d like another avenue to expand Limitless Adventure and potentially introduce it to a larger audience, I do take issue with how they’re planning on injecting ads. […]

No injecting ads before or during a show, but there can be ads after the show is over. Google obviously sees this as serving an ad that is separate from the show itself–and the TOS says that they won’t sell or target ads against episode content or individual podcast creators–but there are plenty of shows (mine included) that end with a cold close. It’s reasonable to assume that in that case, an ad that follows directly after would be misconstrued as being connected (even tangentially) with the show.

And here’s the kicker, Google isn’t even offering to share advertising revenue with podcasters. That’s just slimy. Aside from greed, I can’t see any reason why Google wouldn’t treat these post-rolls ads the same way they do ads on YouTube. If Google’s going to have the audacity to serve advertising against podcasts and create potential confusion for listeners inadvertently associating those ads with their shows, they should at the very least be sharing revenue with producers.

Team Friends With Beverages ➝

My buddy Keenan Schneider, alongside his wife Gia, Fletcher, and Limitless Adventure co-host Charles Stark, have formed an Extra Life team with the brilliant name, “Friends with Beverages.” On November 7 they’ll be taking part in a 24-hour gaming marathon to raise money for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals. I donated as soon as I heard of the team’s formation and would encourage you to do so as well. Every little bit helps and it’s for a great cause.

‘Actual Formatted Capacity Less’ ➝

G. Keenan Schneider explains why a 64GB iPhone doesn’t appear to have 64GB of storage.

Limitless Adventure Episode 10 ➝

I really enjoyed this latest episode of Limitless Adventure, especially the Apple retail discussion at the end of the show. Both of the hosts, G. Keenan Schneider and Charles Stark, worked in Apple Stores in the past and have an interesting perspective on the recent opening of Apple’s Brussels location. If you’ve never listened to the show before, this is a great place to start.

‘All of that is what Apple means to me. That’s why I write about it.’ ➝

G. Keenan Schneider shares a few stories to explain why Apple means so much to him. I suggest reading every word of it — each story is heartfelt and well-written. This piece serves as a wonderful reminder of why so many have an affinity for the products and the company. Apple’s comprised of people who are incredibly talented and care deeply about the work they do. We don’t have to love every product they release or choice that they make, but more than any other company, I believe they make decisions with all the best intentions — not just for the bottom line, but for the employees and customers alike. If you read one thought piece about Apple today, make it this one.
