White iPhone May Launch in Italy on April 26 ➝

Citing a reliable source, iPhoneItalia is claiming that the white iPhone 4 will launch in Italy on April 26.

J.D. Remington points out that Apple usually staggers their products releases. So, if iPhoneItalia’s source is correct, we may be seeing the white iPhone in the US even earlier.

Apple Says White iPhone Coming This Spring ➝

Ian Sherr reporting for Wall Street Journal:

Apple said Thursday the white iPhone was would be released in the spring, reiterating a projection the company made in October.

Bloomberg has heard that it will be released at the end of the month on both Verizon and AT&T.

White iPhone 4 Appears in AT&T’s Online System ➝

Zach Epstein:

AT&T is now showing two versions of Apple’s unicorn-colored iPhone. The entries appear in AT&T’s Online Account Management system (OLAM), and read as “iPhone 4 – 16GB White” and “iPhone 4 – 32GB White.” While the carrier’s online account tool obviously wouldn’t include any indication as far as when we might expect white iPhone 4 models to hit the store shelves, it’s looking like late February or early March at this point.

I don’t know why anyone would purchase an iPhone 3-4 months before the next model is going to be announced. The white model shouldn’t be released this late in the iPhone 4’s lifespan.

Apple Delays White iPhone Until Spring 2011 ➝

Apple Inc said on Tuesday that it would delay release of its eagerly anticipated white iPhone again, this time until next spring.

Originally delayed until July, then the end of the year, and now until next spring. A couple of weeks ago Pocket-lint wrote about a source who told them that the reason for the delay was a color-mismatched home button. But, Cult of Mac’s Leander Kahney has a new explanation:

The white iPhone 4 can’t take accurate photographs. The handset’s semi-translucent glass case leaks light in, ruining pictures taken with the internal camera, especially when the built-in flash is used.

Leander Kahney’s source says that Apple may need to completely redesign the device in order to fix the problem, if this is true then Apple may never release the white iPhone 4 and simply completely shift focus towards the iPhone 5.

White iPhone 4 Delay Explained ➝

Well, according to our jacket wearing gent, Apple is having trouble getting its two suppliers in the Far East to match the white used in the manufacturing of the parts. The white home button colour doesn’t match the white front face plate colour, it turns out.

The folks at Pocket-lint ran into the white iPhone carrying gentleman at a New York City press event and asked him why the device hadn’t been released yet. Seems like a simple enough explanation, I just can’t understand why it is taking so long to get it fix.

Apple to Discontinue Free Case Program ➝

We now know that the iPhone 4 antenna attenuation issue is even smaller than we originally thought. A small percentage of iPhone 4 users need a case, and we want to continue providing them a Bumper case for free. For everyone else, we are discontinuing the free case program on all iPhone 4s sold after September 30, 2010. We are also returning to our normal returns policy for all iPhone 4s sold after September 30. Users experiencing antenna issues should call AppleCare to request a free Bumper case.

This is no surprise. Shortly after Apple announced the free case program in July, talk of actual problems associated with the attenuation practically disappeared. As expected, the antenna problem wasn’t as big of a deal as it appeared to be.

Papermaster’s Cultural Incompatibility ➝

The always well-informed Yukari Iwatani Kane and Ian Sherr, reporting for the Wall Street Journal:

Several people familiar with Mr. Papermaster’s situation said his departure was driven by a broader cultural incompatibility.

Mr. Papermaster had lost the confidence of Mr. Jobs months ago and hasn’t been part of the decision-making process for some time, these people said. They added that Mr. Papermaster didn’t appear to have the type of creative thinking expected at Apple and wasn’t used to Apple’s corporate culture, where even senior executives are expected to keep on top of the smallest details of their areas of responsibility and often have to handle many tasks directly, as opposed to delegating them.

Well, that explains it nicely. Papermaster failed with the iPhone 4 antenna but that wasn’t the only reason he got canned, just the straw that broke the camel’s back.
