macOS Sequoia Adds Weekly Permission Prompt for Screenshot and Screen Recording Apps ➝

Chance Miller, reporting for 9 to 5 Mac:

With macOS Sequoia this fall, using apps that need access to screen recording permissions will become a little bit more tedious. Apple is rolling out a change that will require you to give explicit permission on a weekly basis to these types of apps, and every time you reboot your Mac.

If you’ve been using the macOS Sequoia beta this summer in conjunction with a third-party screenshot or screen recording app, you’ve likely been prompted multiple times to continue allowing that app access to your screen. While many speculated this could be a bug, that’s not the case.

I use CleanShot X on my work machine regularly and I’m not looking forward to seeing this prompt every week.

I’ve been toying with Linux again on my 11-inch MacBook Air and I absolutely love how much control you have over the system. Maybe DHH is onto something with his switch away from macOS.

Details on the Next iPad Pro ➝

Chance Miller, writing for 9 to 5 Mac on Macotakara’s recent iPad Pro report:

The report goes on to explain that Apple is likely to ditch the headphone jack with this year’s iPad Pro models, a move the company first made with the iPhone 7. While Apple includes a Lightning to 3.5mm headphone adapter to ease the blow for iPhone users, it will not do the same for iPad Pro users, according to today’s report.

Today’s report corroborates that this year’s iPad Pro models will feature Face ID, but it notes that there is no support for landscape Face ID as earlier reports had indicated. This presents an interesting problem for the iPad Pro, which is used commonly in landscape mode with accessories such as the Smart Keyboard. Macotakara notes, however, that Apple is moving the Smart Connector on this year’s models to “the lower rear side – close to the Lightning connector.”

I can’t remember the last time I used the headphone jack on my iPad, but it was most likely before I purchased AirPods. I’m probably going to be buying one of these iPad Pros and I’m fine with the headphone jack disappearing. Just don’t let Nilay know about this rumor because we’ll never hear the end of it.

The Face ID rumor is odd to me, though. I never use my iPad in portrait mode. With the only exception being the times when I launch Noisli, a simple white noise app that doesn’t support landscape orientation for some reason. Maybe the Face ID camera will be located in the same place as the current iPad Pro’s FaceTime camera, but will work in either orientation for the purposes of Face ID. Otherwise, I have no idea what Apple is thinking.

HomePod Firmware Seemingly Confirms iPhone 8 Design and Support for ‘Face ID’ ➝

Chance Miller, writing for 9 to 5 Mac:

Last week, Apple released the first build of the upcoming HomePod’s firmware, allowing curious developers to unpack the code and learn a few additional details about the smart speaker. Now, developer Steve Troughton-Smith has discovered code that seemingly confirms that the upcoming iPhone will support face unlock…

Smith explains that the code indicates the existence of infra-red face unlock in BiometricKit, which is the framework responsible for Touch ID. The code further suggests that Apple’s face unlock feature will be able to detect partially occluded face and faces from various angles. The codename for the project Pearl ID.

The HomePod firmware also includes an image depicting, what we assume to be, the design of the upcoming iPhone Pro, which was discovered by Guilherme Rambo.

Both of these discovered in a file that an Apple employee uploaded to a publicly available server. Hashtag double down on secrecy.

iPhone 7 Rumored to Come in New Space Black Option ➝

Chance Miller, writing for 9 to 5 Mac:

Today’s report also again mentions that the iPhone 7 will come in a new black color option, similar to that of the 2013 Mac Pro. The report says that the release of a black iPhone 7 is “highly likely.” We reported last month on this possibility, likening the color to the Space Black Apple Watch.

Apple has expanded the iPhone color options over the past few years, but space gray is still the only variation that features a black front. I’m glad that this could be changing soon.

iPhone 7 to Ditch 16GB Storage Option in Favor of 32GB ➝

Chance Miller, writing for 9 to 5 Mac:

Following several sketchy reports, The Wall Street Journal is now reporting that the iPhone 7 will indeed ditch the 16GB tier. For the first time ever, the base iPhone model will come in at 32GB.

It’s about damn time.

Apple Reportedly Planning Increased Storage in Next iPhone ➝

Man, I hope this is true. 16GB storage capacities feel a bit too paltry at this point. 32GB should be the smallest storage capacity available.

Apple’s All-New Music App ➝

Chance Miller details the new Music app from the first developer beta of iOS 8.4, which was released earlier this week. The application sports a refined user interface and some new features — a recently added section, Up Next, redesigned artist screen, and more.

This was a bit of an unexpected release from Apple (at least from my perspective). This is the kind of update that I would have thought to be bundled in iOS 9 not 8.4. I wonder if the days of monolithic iOS upgrades are behind us and Apple will be more willing to ship major application upgrades mid-cycle in the future. It would certainly be an interesting way to reduce the sticker shock from multi-gigabyte iOS updates that are such an annoyance for 16GB device users.
