Google Pulls Sparrow from App Stores ➝

Ingrid Lunden, reporting for Techcrunch:

[Google] appears to have pulled the Sparrow iOS and Mac apps from their respective Apple App Stores. Google, as you may remember, acquired the French startup Sparrow, including its staff, its email management apps and its technology, back in 2012.

I’ve been using Sparrow for OS X for years — I guess it’s finally time to find a new email client.

Sparrow Acquired by Google ➝

Sparrow’s Dom Leca, in an email to current users:

We will continue to make available our existing products, and we will provide support and critical updates to our users. However, as we’ll be busy with new projects at Google, we do not plan to release new features for the Sparrow apps.

Not really what I want to hear from the maker of my favorite email client. I’ll hold onto Sparrow as long as I can but it’s inevitable — I’m going to be switching back to Apple Mail.

Another quick thought: how long can big companies continue to acquire and shutter applications and web services before everyone starts to realize that these big companies don’t care about their users?

Sparrow for iPad Coming ➝

I’ll finally be able to read email on my iPad again.

Smoking Apples Reviews Sparrow ➝

Ankur Gupta:

Honestly speaking, Sparrow is close to being the perfect mail client for the Mac platform, for me at least.

Sparrow is my favorite email client for the Mac. I started using it during the beta and haven’t looked back since then.

I’m also very happy that Smoking Apples is churning out articles again after their two month hiatus.
