SteamOS Expands Beyond Steam Deck ➝

From the announcement:

With Lenovo’s announcement at CES 2025 of the Lenovo Legion Go S, we are pleased to share that their “Powered by SteamOS” model is the first handheld officially licensed to ship with Valve’s SteamOS. We built this operating system to provide a seamless user experience optimized for gaming, while retaining access to the power and flexibility of a PC. SteamOS is the same operating system we run on Steam Deck, and the team is making updates to ensure it fully supports the Lenovo Legion Go S and provides the same seamless experience customers expect.

In addition, the same work that we are doing to support the Lenovo Legion Go S will improve compatibility with other handhelds. Ahead of Legion Go S shipping, we will be shipping a beta of SteamOS which should improve the experience on other handhelds, and users can download and test this themselves. And of course we’ll continue adding support and improving the experience with future releases.

I imagine a lot of hardware manufacturers are happy to have an alternative operating system like this available to them.

ThinkPad TrackPoint Keyboard II ➝

The same keyboard and TrackPoint from Lenovo’s line of ThinkPad notebooks, in wireless keyboard form factor.

I received this as a gift for Christmas and it’s excellent. I plan to use even managing our home servers and home theater PCs in scenarios where a physical keyboard is necessary.

Palm Puts Itself Up for Sale ➝

Bloomberg reports that Palm has been working with Goldman Sachs and Qatalyst Partners to find a buyer for the company.

HTC and Lenovo have both been mentioned as possible buyers. Dell is said to have also looked at buying Palm but ultimately decided against it.

Palm has been struggling for several years and I’m sad to say that, unless they find a suitable buyer, this could be the end. Palm has resorted to some desperate moves as of late, even offering their flagship device on Verizon for $49.99 with a buy-one-get-one-free deal.

So, who should buy Palm? As much as HTC would benefit from Palm’s patent portfolio in their lawsuit with Apple, I really think Om Malik was right when he said that Motorla should buy Palm. What Motorola needs is to differentiate. They shouldn’t just be another Windows Phone 7 or Android handset maker. They make good enough hardware, but why would anyone buy a Motorola handset over the Google branded Nexus One? I think webOS should be the answer.
