A Low Cost iPhone Could Be Coming This Spring ➝

Mark Sullivan, reporting for Fast Company:

Several publications and a few analysts have already predicted that Apple will announce a new sub-$500 iPhone, which may be called either the iPhone SE 2 or the iPhone 9. My own sources near the iPhone supply chain tell me that parts production for the new phone is now ramping up.

One source believes the new phone will likely sell at $399, roughly the same price as the first iPhone SE.

This would be well timed for my in-laws, who are looking to purchase their first smartphone sometime in the next few months. A low-cost iPhone seems like the perfect device for them.

Pondering an iPhone SE 2 ➝

Stephen Hackett:

I don’t think the market for the iPhone SE is very big, but I bet it’s bigger than Apple thought it would be a couple of years ago. I know many SE users are devoted to having the most compact smartphone they can, and I think Apple should continue to serve that market.

If Apple does announce an iPhone SE 2 this spring, my wife will be first in line to purchase on day one. She’s a huge fan of the compact form factor and prefers the less-slippery, harder edges of the 5S-era design. And of course, having a smartphone that actually fits in her jeans pocket is a plus.

In terms of what to expect in such a device, I’m thinking an A10 Fusion chip, a glass back for wireless charging, and the single-lens camera system from the iPhone 7.

iPhone SE 2 Rumored to Launch in First Half of 2018 ➝

Joe Rossignol, writing for MacRumors:

Apple will release a second-generation iPhone SE in the first half of 2018, according to China’s Economic Daily News.

The report claims the tentatively named iPhone SE 2 will be assembled exclusively by Taiwanese manufacturer Wistron at its factory in Bengaluru, India, where some assembly of the current iPhone SE occurs.

The rumored release date window lines up with an earlier report from Focus Taiwan claiming a new iPhone SE will ship in the first quarter of 2018, which encompasses January through March of next year.

The iPhone 6S and iPhone 8 have eliminated my interest in 4-inch iPhones, but I know the form factor continues to have a devoted fanbase. My wife being one of them. Not a month goes by without her asking if there are any rumors of a new iPhone SE. She has no interest in carrying a larger phone — it’s not comfortable for her to hold and none of them fit in her jeans’ pockets. She’s going to be very happy about this rumor. And the supposed release window is conveniently timed — it’ll be about two years after she purchased her current iPhone SE, which is exactly when she planned to buy a new phone.
