AT&T Plan Would Let App Makers Pay for Subscribers’ Data Use ➝

This sounds like a horrible idea.

Verizon’s New Smartphone Data Plans ➝

Phil Goldstein writing for FierceWireless:

Verizon spokeswoman Brenda Raney told FierceWireless that new smartphone customers will choose from one of three options: $30 for 2 GB, $50 for 5 GB or $80 for 10 GB. There will be an overage charge of $10 per GB of data. Verizon will also charge $10 for 75 MB per month for feature phone users. AT&T Mobility charges $15 per month for 200 MB and $25 per month for 2 GB.

If you’re going to get rid of unlimited data, why not charge a flat rate per MB to everyone. Maybe, $0.01 per MB. That would work out to about $10 per GB, which is what they’re charging for overages. Unfortunately, Verzion would never go for it. Verizon along with every other cellular company wants to charge you for data that you’re not using, and people continue to pay for fear that they’d be charged outrageous fees if they ever went over their limit.

And, why in the world does the 75MB plan for feature phones cost the same as a 1GB overage on smartphone plans?
