Thinking of a Perfect Laptop ➝

I’m using a Framework 13 as my personal computer now and it’s pretty darn close to what I’d describe as perfect. But there are some things that I’d change:

  • Longer battery life. I’m not sure what I normally get with my current Framework because I always have a charger nearby, but it would be nice to get a bit more time between top-offs.
  • Better performance for local AI. This is the biggest bottleneck for me right now. The 7640U that I have will run most everything I throw at it, but it just isn’t as capable when running local AI.
  • A more ridged chassis — something closer to a MacBook Pro, although that would be challenging to accomplish while retaining repairability.
  • Improved thermals — the fan is louder than I’d want under load and the bottom of the system gets quite warm as well.

Much of the list above is addressed, at least to some degree, by the Framework 13 Pro. That makes me pretty hopefully for the future of Framework laptops — they’re just going to keep getting better.
