Paris Buttfield-Addison had his Apple account locked, which he believes was triggered after attempting to redeem an Apple gift card. Michael Tsai, at the link above, has done an excellent job of picking out some choice quotes from the original story and commentary around the web regarding it.

Seeing something like this just reaffirms that I’ve been heading in the right direction by moving what I can to self hosting and reducing my reliance on Apple and other major tech companies. The risks are just too darn high and the lack of transparency and recourse doesn’t help the situation.

I would much rather take control of my own data with self hosting and spread out the risk by using services from a variety of companies rather than put all my eggs in one vendor’s basket.
