I’m no fan of Facebook and actively encourage everyone to leave the site. It’s overstayed its welcome and holds too much influence over society. But I think the changes that Mark Zuckerberg has announced will move things in a positive direction.
Their use of “fact checkers” has always felt like a terrible practice. Because sometimes these fact checkers are just wrong. Or they frame their verdict in a way that’s in itself misleading — claiming that something is untrue over minor errors that are inconsequential to the heart of the claim.
And because of how these “fact checks” are framed by the platforms, they always feel more like information endorsed by the platform. Editorial decisions are being made about what is being fact checked, who is doing the fact checking, etc.
Community notes feel like a much more elegant solution. They’re more like a pinned reply that is written and chosen by users rather than a decree bestowed upon us from on high.
