Don’t Just Joke About Facebook ➝

If you’re the kind of person that points and laughs when Facebook goes down because no one should be using it, I agree with you. But next time, rather than just making jokes, point your friends and family toward alternatives. Spin up a Mastodon instance and send out some invites, help them setup a weblog, suggest that they join Signal — something. Anything.

Jokes are cool and all, but that’s not going to convince billions of users to suddenly stop using Facebook. They’re going to need something else to redirect their time and attention to. And if we proactively nudge them toward something better, maybe we can reduce the influence that Facebook has on our society.
