Apple Adopting the Word ‘Follow’ for Podcasts ➝

James Cridland, writing for Podnews:

Tom Webster from Edison Research says 47% of people who don’t currently listen to podcasts think that ‘subscribing’ to a podcast will cost money, describing it as a stone in the shoe of podcasting’s growth run. He tells Podnews: “Today, Apple, Spotify, and YouTube are the three most widely used services to play podcasts, and now the word Subscribe means ‘automatically download for free’ in exactly none of them.

“Subscribe” has always been a bit of a confusing term for podcasting, since the vast majority of podcasts are free. “Follow” is a more familiar term that doesn’t have the connotation that it will cost money.

This same change should be made by everyone with a free email newsletter or when promoting an RSS feed. I’ve already started moving toward it on my own sites with few exceptions.
