Apple Moves to Editorially Curated Lists in App Store ➝

Sarah Perez, writing for TechCrunch:

Going forward, it seems that Apple is moving away from these algorithmically derived and more automated lists. Today, the App Store’s Games section instead features lists like “Best New Games” and “All Time Greats,” which are created by Apple editors and refreshed on a weekly basis. These are featured alongside previous launched lists like “More Games You Might Like,” which is a personalized list based on your purchase history.

This is a step in the right direction for the App Store. The only way to ensure that all of the apps at the top of the heap got their because of their respective quality is to remove algorithms from the equation. Less than respectable developers are too quick to game the system through spammy means. I look forward to a more healthy ecosystem because of this and hope that developers with truly great apps find it easier to make a living going forward.
