John Paczkowski reporting for AllThingsD:
Multiple sources familiar with Apple’s thinking say the company felt it had no choice but to replace Google Maps with its own, because of a disagreement over a key feature: Voice-guided turn-by-turn driving directions.
Google had too much control over what Apple was able to do with the Maps application on the iPhone. The new Maps app in iOS 6 could have used a little bit more time in testing to fix some of its data issues. But, I don’t see how Apple had any other choice. And, how much longer could they sit and wait before having voice-guided turn-by-turn directions? I’d err on the side of sooner rather than later.
